A Little Bit About Plymouth
In 1928, Walter P. Chrysler formed the Plymouth Motor Corporation. Interestingly, the name "Plymouth" is actually from Plymouth Rock, the proverbial first American Rock the pilgrims set foot on when they came ashore from the Mayflower. The original Plymouth logo is a graphic image of a sailboat (hmm). In any case, Walter created the Plymouth Motor Corp. to compete directly with Ford and Chevy. The first car that rolled off the Plymouth assembly line was called Model Q -- an engineering code. Nothing flashy, Q is your basic entry level automobile, marketing toward first time car buyers. However, Q's selling point was the factory standard four wheel hydraulic brakes, which is often an option with the other car competitors. At 45 horsepower, 60 plus miles per hour, this four cylinder performance buggy gave Ford a run for its money. Forty years later, Plymouth introduced the 1968 Plymouth Road Runner, another "entry level" bare bones car that would kick Henry's Pony car's ass. With taxi style bench seats, no carpet, four on the floor mounted stick shifter, Plymouth wasted no money on frills and poured all of it into performance. The base model came standard with a 383 big block/335 bhp and used heads, intake, cams, exhaust manifolds from the 440 Super Commando.
Road Runner defined the true meaning of a muscle car.
