A Little Bit About Dodge
Dodge Brothers was formed in 1914 and produced their first automobile in November of that year. It was an L-head 4 cylinder vehicle. From their early days Dodges were known as dependable cars. They were tough too. General George Pershing used over 150 Dodge touring cars in his Campaign on the Mexican border against Poncho Villa. A young George Patton took 3 of them on the fabled 1 mechanized infantry charge in the same campaign. As Dodge entered the postwar fifties era, it was beginning to feel heat from its competitors who were producing slicker looking cars. At one point, K.T. Keller, president of Dodge Brothers, believed the roofline of a car had to be tall enough so a man with a big head could wear his hat while driving. Meanwhile, Chevy was releasing Corvettes and Ford had its T-Birds, Dodge was beginning to look a little fuddy. Along comes Virgil Exner, who was hired by Chrysler to redesign a new look and style for this emerging modern age of cars. One of Virgil's most famous designs was his 1954 Dodge Firearrow series, which were concept cars that were HEMI equipped. Sadly enough, they never quite made it to production. However, Exner helped inspire new Chrysler aesthetic and ten years later Mopar engineers unleashed the legendary 1964 Dodge 426 HEMI. In that same year, Dodge placed fourth in the Daytona 500* and proved to the racing world it's worthiness. Leave the hat at home, Keller, let's go racing. *Petty in his 64 Plymouth Hemi #43 car came in first place.
